Domestic Patent Commercialization Workshop: Problems and Strategies

On June 4, 2021, Research Center for Human Centric Engineering (HUMIC RC) held an online workshop entitled “Commercialization of Domestic Patents: Problems and Strategies” inviting Mr. Hosiana Daniel Adrian Gultom, S.H., M.H. (Chairman of the Legal Aid and Consultation Institute, Faculty of Law, Pelita Harapan University) as speaker. This activity was guided by Mr. Muhammad Hablul Barri, M.T., as MC, and the event was opened by Mr. Satria Mandala, Ph.D. as director of HUMIC RC. The majority of this activity was attended by lecturers/researchers from Telkom University internally.

This activity is a sharing of knowledge about patents, in particular how to commercialize local patents as well as explaining how to protect patents from a legal perspective. There are several points from the discussion of this knowledge sharing, such as:

  • Inventors/researchers need to understand the community’s need for an industrially applicable technology under the inventor’s expertise.
  • Searching the registered patent database can be done through an HKI consultant or requesting assistance from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property.
  • Before applying for a patent, understand the laws and regulations, documents, application fees, and the patent registration process.
  • It is recommended to register a patent before publication so that it can be commercialized immediately and get legal protection.
  • Since the patent legal protection system applies only in each region of the country, patents can be filed through the international patent system so that they can be used in several countries at once.

After Mr. Hosiana finished the presentation, the event continued with a QnA session and discussion with the participants until the end of the event. With this workshop, it is hoped that participants will know more about the regulations, management, needs, and protection of patents, especially from a legal perspective.
